Financial incentives for training to teach in Welsh

If you want to take a training course to teach in Welsh in secondary schools, you may be eligible for funding under the Welsh-medium Incentive Supplement Scheme (WMIS). This scheme is aimed at trainee teachers on eligible courses who need additional support to raise confidence in their ability to teach effectively through the medium of Welsh. The following grants are currently available.

  • £1,500 for each eligible trainee or £1,800 for those on secondary science and mathematics courses
  • £600 each academic year for maintained schools that act as partner schools in providing language mentoring to trainees on the WMIS scheme during teaching attachments
  • £150 for each trainee on the WMIS scheme is available to accredited institutions that support trainees with additional tutoring under the scheme.

You should contact training providers in Wales to find out whether or not they offer courses under the WMIS scheme.
