Education

Secondary school education

We ask you to provide the names, brief addresses and attendance periods for up to three secondary schools or colleges you have attended.

If you completed your full-time education a while ago, you should provide the name, address and attendance period for the last school or college you attended as a full-time student, and then up to two other schools or colleges attended more recently.

GCSEs, A levels and equivalent qualifications

We ask you to provide details for the following qualifications which you have obtained or for which you are studying:

  • GCSEs in English, mathematics and a science subject at grade C or higher or equivalents
  • up to nine other GCSEs or equivalents
  • up to nine A levels, AS levels or equivalents

GCSEs in English, mathematics and science

If you do not already have GCSEs at grade C or higher in English, mathematics and science or equivalents, but you expect to obtain these qualifications before courses start, you need to contact your chosen training providers before you apply to find out whether or not they can consider you.

If you do not expect to obtain GCSEs at grade C or higher in English, mathematics and science or equivalents before courses start, you need to confirm whether or not your chosen training providers will offer you equivalency tests in these subjects before you apply. You should only apply to a training provider and tick the 'apply for equivalence test' box if they have agreed to offer you the required tests. Some training providers may state whether or not they offer equivalency tests in their course Entry Profiles on Course Search.

If you are uncertain whether or not your qualifications are equivalent to GCSEs at grade C or higher in English, mathematics or science, you need to confirm that your chosen training providers will consider them as equivalents before you apply. Some training providers may have included information about acceptable alternative qualifications in their course Entry Profiles on Course Search.

Your first degree or equivalent

We ask you to give the following information for your undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification:

  • name of the university or college where you studied or are still studying
  • title of the award
  • degree class, if you are already a graduate
  • course title
  • start date
  • results date
  • time spent studying each of the main and subsidiary subjects as a percentage of your whole degree.

You must have a degree awarded by a UK university or the former CNAA (Council for National Academic Awards), or an equivalent qualification to start a PGCE or PGDE course. Before you apply, you must contact your chosen training providers to find out if your degree or equivalent qualification is acceptable for entry to the courses you wish to study. Providers will want to know the proportion of your degree studies that relates to the primary school curriculum or the secondary school subject(s) you wish to teach.

Some training providers may have included information about acceptable degrees or equivalent qualifications in their course Entry Profiles on Course Search.

Course entry requirements provides more information about the qualification requirements for PGCE and PGDE course entry.

Equivalence of qualifications

The GTTR cannot advise you whether or not your qualifications are acceptable for entry to teacher training.

The following organisation can provide guidance on the equivalence of lesser- known British qualifications and overseas qualifications, but there is a charge for this service.
