When to apply

You can apply through the GTTR from early October 2011 for courses that start in 2012. Most courses start in September each year.

You are strongly recommended to give yourself sufficient time to complete your application, including your reference, pay your application fee and resolve any queries so that it can be sent to us before the relevant deadline passes.

Primary teaching courses

If you are applying for primary teaching courses, we must receive your application by 1 December 2011 to guarantee that we can send it to your first choice training provider for consideration. First choice training providers must consider all applications received at the GTTR by 1 December.

If you are applying for primary teaching courses and we receive your application after 1 December 2011 but before 30 June 2012, we will only send it to training providers that still have vacancies. Training providers do not have to consider any applications for primary teaching received at the GTTR after 1 December 2011. Some training providers may be able to consider you if you apply after this date, but you must contact providers about vacancies before applying.

Middle years, secondary and post-compulsory or further education teaching courses

The 1 December deadline for primary teaching courses does not apply to middle years, secondary, post-compulsory or further education teaching courses. If we receive your application for these courses at any time between October 2011 and 30 June 2012, we will only send it to training providers that still have vacancies. Training providers may fill their places for some courses early in the application cycle. You should apply as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of obtaining a place.

Flexible and modular courses

Flexible and modular courses have several start dates each year and you can enter the earliest date that you can start a course on your application. You should contact training providers to find out their course start dates and ensure that you apply early enough to be considered for your preferred start date.

If you want to start a course in 2013, you need to ask training providers whether or not they can consider you for 2013 course entry in the 2012 application cycle before you apply.

Applications received at the GTTR after 30 June 2012

If we receive your application after 30 June 2012, we cannot send it to any training providers for consideration. We will enter your application directly into our Clearing system. In Clearing, you contact training providers direct to find out whether or not they can consider you.

You want to start your course in 2013

You cannot apply in the 2012 application cycle for courses starting in 2013, but some training providers may agree to defer your place when they make an offer. If you accept a deferred place for 2013 entry, you must still meet all the conditions of the offer by 31 August 2012, unless agreed otherwise with the training provider

You need to take a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course

If you think you need to improve or refresh your knowledge of the subject you want to teach prior to doing your teacher training, you should discuss your position with your chosen training providers before applying. Training providers should be able to tell you whether or not you will need to take a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course and, if you do, the length of course required. SKE courses can vary in length from two weeks to a year depending on your needs.

If you need to take an SKE course, training providers will tell you when to apply for teacher training courses through the GTTR. They will advise you to apply in the current application cycle for 2012 entry if you can complete an SKE course that meets your needs and start your teacher training by September 2012. If you will not be able to complete a suitable SKE course before September 2012, they will advise you to apply in the next application cycle for 2013 entry.

You will be living abroad during the application cycle

If you will be living abroad during the application cycle, you should contact your chosen training providers for advice about when to apply through the GTTR.
