Other teaching courses

Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)

The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) runs the GTP. On this programme you would be employed in a school, earn a salary and work towards gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) required to teach in state-maintained schools in England and Wales. For more information about the GTP, visit the TDA's website.

Teaching English as a foreign or second language

You could consider taking a course to teach English as a foreign or second language either in the UK or abroad. For information about the different types of courses and qualifications, visit the British Council's website.

Reapply through the GTTR

If you want to reapply for postgraduate teacher training through the GTTR in the next applications' year, you will need to make a new online application (we can't reuse an application from a previous year). You can reapply through the GTTR from early October in the year before you want to start your course.

If you are planning to reapply for teacher training, it's worth gaining some extensive classroom experience. Contact your local schools to ask about becoming a teaching assistant or just helping in the classroom.

Other careers

The Directgov website provides careers advice and information about finding a job including a job search function.

The Learndirect website provides information and advice about different careers paths, courses, qualifications and training for business.

A part-time course or an apprenticeship leading to a different career is another option. From July to September each year you can search for part-time courses offered at universities and colleges in the UCAS scheme on the UCAS website.

Apprenticeships are available for lots of different careers. With an Apprenticeship you can earn money while you're learning and gain recognised qualifications. The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) has responsibility for Apprenticeships in the UK. They also have a vacancy search on their website that links apprentices to vacancies.

Start a business

If you decide to start your own business, these organisations may be able to help you:

  • Prince's Trust - a UK charity helping young people aged 18-30 start a business; the Prince's Trust provides advice, training courses, development awards and enterprise schemes.
  • Business Link - the official government website for businesses of all sizes. Business Link provides free business advice and support services through online and local advisers.
